5 Years of Marriage: How We Got Here

Guess what! Tomorrow my husband and I celebrate 5 wonderful years of marriage.  Yup, 5 years ago today I was anxiously anticipating marrying my soulmate.  So much has changed in the last 5 years, mostly to do with the arrival of our two wonderful kids.  Since we're all friends here, I thought I would share a little story about how me and the hubs got together all those years ago in honor of this momentous occasion.

The Music Man

It all started with The Music Man.  Back in August 2007, I had just graduated college and my friend and dance teacher, Lisa had been asked to direct a community theater production of The Music Man. She invited all of her students to audition to be a part of the show.  Another opportunity to dance, I was all for it!  I auditioned with one of my closest friends and we were both cast as principal dancers and dance captains.  Unbeknownst to me, my future hubby had performed with the group before and again auditioned to be a part of this show.  So, now we were in the same show, but we still hadn't actually met...

A few weeks into the show, we started learning one of the big dance numbers which involved partnering.  Lisa assigned partners for all the principal dancers and she happened to pair me with my hubs.  We had not spoken two words to each other when we we asked to try and around the world lift where you grab hands with your partner leap behind them and wrap your legs around their waist, they swing you around to their front and then spin around with you still holding on with your legs around their waist.  Hard to describe, but cool to see.

So, our very first interaction was attempting this lift.  We hit it perfectly on the first try! After that we finally started talking and eventually started dating during the production.  Here is a shot of us from one of the performances of The Music Man.

Anything Goes

We continued to date after The Music Man and officially became boyfriend and girlfriend the following March.  The next year Lisa was again directing for the theater group, so we were again dance partners.  This time the production was Anything Goes.  Not only were we in the musical together, I had also convinced him to join my dance class.  He had danced as a kid, but hadn't taken class since high school.  I know, I had him hooked, right?! We got to partner in several dances there as well.  Here are some pictures from our dances together that year.   (If you don't recognize me in the first picture, I'm the one on the right eating my friend's wrist...)

And the rest as they say is history.  We were engaged in February 2010 on the Eiffel Tower in Paris and were married on October 29, 2011.  It was a fun but elegant Halloween themed wedding complete with corpse bride cake toppers, spider web candelabras, carved pumpkin decor, a card board cut out of Mr. and Mrs. Frankenstein for photos, and tons of other touches.  Here are a few shots from the wedding!

I think we pulled off a good balance between classy and fun!!  I can't believe 5 years have passed and yet I can't imagine my life without the kiddos.  Tomorrow the hubs and I are going out to celebrate and I am so excited!  We're going out to a steak dinner and a Broadway show!  We are going to see Something Rotten.  I hear it is very good, but I will be sure to let you know my thoughts on Facebook.  In the meantime, enjoy your Halloweekend and I will see you on Tuesday.

P.S. Be sure to go to my Facebook page on Halloween to check out our reveal of our family's Halloween costumes!!

Happy Halloween!!

Cheers,

Emily
